According to a survey of Flexjobs.com, the top reason why people chose to start as a freelancer,is to attain a healthier work-life balance.
However, there are more reasons why someone would start going freelance.
The same survey shows that work schedule flexibility is also one of the main reasons tochange. Actually if you would consolidate many arguments to one common factor, it is “freedom”. The general concept of having freedom to make choices that suit their lives was a huge reason to freelance!
This freedom includes:
- Freedom of choosing your project and/or client
- Flexibility of work schedule
- Freedom of work location
- Calling your own shots
- Choosing what to wear
Next to this, the desire of being their own boss, with a lower threshold to go independent are the main reasons to go freelance.
Some of the secondary reasons are:
- Not needing to think about company politics
- Increased productivity
- Unlimited earning potential
However, there are some aspects you need to consider when going freelance. According toMonster.com, the top reasons potential obstacles going freelance are:
- Feeling isolated
- Hustling 24/7 for new gigs and projects (can be tackled by teaming up with Dark Light)
- Potential inconsistent work and cash flow (can be tackled by teaming up with Dark Light)
- Potentially juggling multiple clients
- Instead of having one boss, you have several clients to answer to
- No paid time off, no maternity/paternity leave
- Running every business aspect (sales and marketing, invoicing, signing contracts, troubleshooting technology, keeping track of tax deductible business expenses, making estimated tax payments, etc.)
- No one to back you up if you're sick or injured
- Feeling scattered/unfocused and lacking structure
