In one of the episodes of the world famous comedy series "Friends", 5 of the 6 lead actors are playing a game where they see who knows more about the other person. The final question in this game is about one of these lead characters; "What is Chandler Bing's job?". Because of the lack of this knowledge, the two people where the question is asked to, lose the game. It will even take another 5 seasons, that the audience finally finds out that Chandler Bing works in Statistical Analysis & Data Reconfiguration or as we now call it Data Science.
In the '90s, when these series aired on TV, the writers had the idea to give a dorky, boring role to Chandler Bing. Today, Medium.com describes a data scientist as "the sexiest job of the 21st century". Little did they know...
But even for the sexiest job of the current century, many people don't get what data scientists REALLY do. Let us share you what a Data Scientist really does.
If you explain it to a child, one would break the role of a data scientist down in three tasks:
Data Scientists collect data, then analyze the trends within the data, and lastly they make decisions based on the data. Data science is a process in which the goal is to make better choices. To make better choices, data should be collected to properly analyze the situation. Data Scientists analyze, process, and model data, then interpret the results to create actionable plans for companies and other organizations. As one might think, a data scientist’s role combines computer science, statistics, and mathematics.
